LED fixtures are not miniature lights with a colored coating, but rather semi-conductors much like transistors. The light from each indiviual LED is a single color determined by the LEDs composition. Because LEDs have no moving parts, no arc gaps to erode, and no filaments to break, the life span is extensive. Many are rated for as long as 100,000 hours. Three or more colors of LEDs are combined to allow color mixing: typically red, green, and blue additive mixing. LEDs also have the highest strobe speed of any other available fixture. Furthermore, LEDs generate very little heat and UV light which makes them ideal for museums and other venues where these factors are a concern.
