Cucoloris (aka Cuke or Cookie)
The cucoloris is used to create a shadow pattern on a backdrop or on any subject. When it is positioned in front of a light source, the cucoloris breaks up an evenly or flatly lit area into interesting pools of light and shadow. For example, this lighting effect can represent sunlight that has filtered down through tree branches. The cucoloris is made from wood or wire mesh. The wooden models are opaque with open pattern areas. The wire mesh cucloris is more durable and creates more subtle patterns because it reduces the light output rather than blocking it. Both wood and wire mesh are available in 24" x 36" and 4' x 4'.
Dots and Fingers
Dots and fingers function along the same lines as scrims or flags, but instead of reshaping a beam of light, dots and fingers alter or correct an isolated segment of light without affecting the overall pattern.
Empty Frames
Empty frames can be covered with whatever expendable material you may need, and they will hold it in place perfectly. We carry empty frames in 18" x 24" and 4' x 4'.
Flags and Cutters
Flags and cutters are opaque instruments designed to prevent light from reaching areas where it is not desired. We have:
Black and White Polys (Grifflon)
Polies are extremely durable material made of three-ply, high-density rubber. It looks like cloth with webbing woven through to prevent ripping. A poly takes a direct light and bounces it back onto the subject. We carry the following black and white poly sizes:
Reflectors, Mirrors, Shinyboards
A reflector is designed to redirect or bounce light. The reflector has a hard side (sometimes called a lead side) with a smooth surface that gives a hard, bright light. The other side, called the soft side, gives a diffused pattern.
Reflector Slip-ons (scrims)
Reflectors can use a 42in X 42in slip-on single or double net that is held in place by an elastic strap.
Scrims
Scrims reduce light output without affecting color, temperature, or generating electrical interference. Open ended scrims blend the edge of the light beam w/out causing a harsh visual line. Scrims come in 3 basic configurations: single, double, and silk. Single Net will reduce about 30% of the light that shines through it. The single is one layer of material and the handle is usually painted white or green. Double Net will reduce the light by 50%. It has two layers of material and the handle is usually red. Silk provides diffusion in addition to cutting the light. It also softens the light source. The most common sizes for the scrims are:
Butterfly Kits/Overhead Kits
Butterfly Kits are smaller in size (8ft x 8ft or 6ft x 6ft), and they can be supported by a single stand. Overhead Kits are larger, about 12ft x 12ft or 20ft x 20ft. Both are portable, use lightweight tubes, and support lighting control material (nets, silk,etc..). Each kit includes the frame, a single, a double, a silk, and a solid.
