Open Face

Spacelight

A Space Light consists of six 1K nook lights configured like spokes of a wagon wheel, pointing down into a silk cylinder. At the bottom of which is a round diffusion ring to which a diffusion material or gel can be clipped. The Space Light provides overall scattered light for interior scenes. Excellent for 'exterior' settings where they simulate skylight, or large-area lighting, its use for most interiors is questionable.

A Grey Skirt can be hung over the white silk skirt (or instead of) to further shape and control the light. Diffused overhead lighting is only appropriate in certain situations.

Stickup Show Image Click here to see product image

One of the smallest of lights. This unit along with the Button Up and Corky Light are used for hiding a low luminance light source in small places. They can all be mounted by a crocodile clip that will attach them to almost any protrusion.

The Stickup can also be hinged into a corner or crevice. These devices are so small that they usually run straight off a battery.

Blonde Show Image Click here to see product image

The 2000W Blonde's open-faced design provides greater light output per watt than a 2K Fresnel, making it the light of choice for bounce sources. It can double as a direct source with light diffusion. Blondes are used in book lights, frog lights, and for backlight illumination of tissued windows, tented products, etc. Most versions have a collar that clamps on the front of the fixture and provides the support for the barndoors, gel frames, or scrims.

The Redhead is the little brother of the 2K Blonde and differ only in lamp (1K) and size. They are great as small bounce sources, small-fill bounces and for just sprinkling a little light on background objects.

Zips/Soft Lights

A zip/studio soft consists of one or more 1000-watt lamps directed into a "clamshell" white-painted reflector that bounces light in a random pattern, making a light that is soft in relation to the size of the reflector. We have a 2K HMI, 2K tungsten, and 1K tungsten available in the studio softs.

Chinese Lanterns

Chinese lanterns are 19" paper globe lamps. A socket is suspended inside that holds a medium base bulb (household, ECA, ECT, BBA, BCA, etc.)

Cycs, Strips, Nooks, and Broads

When just plain output is needed, broad lights are no frills, utilitarian lights. It is simply a box with a double ended bulb. The distinctive feature of a broad light is its rectangular beam pattern, which makes blending them on a flat wall or cyc much easier.

  • Nook/Broad - the smallest version, a lamp holder with a reflector, versatile source for box light rigs, large silk overhead lights, and large arrays to punch through frames.
  • Cyc/Strips/Border Lights - usually open-faced 1K and 1.5K units in small boxes, they have a asymmetrical throw that puts more output at the top or bottom for even coverage wen the fixture is mounted from the top or bottom.
